Jinheng Bridge spans the Ludan River, a Tributary of Liwu River. It was originally called Bailong Bridge but was renamed to commemorate Jin Heng.

At 2 am on the morning of October 20, 1957 an earthquake measuring 5 on the Richter Scale shock Taroko, triggering a series of rock falls that seriously damaged the under-construction highway.

At dawn, Jin Heng, Chief Engineer of the Ripon Engineering Section, went to inspect the damage. At 6 am a landslide him to his death.

He was the most senior of the many fatalities during the construction of the highway. Upon its completion the bridge was named "Jinxing ridge" and a statue was erected at the site in his memory.

Jinxing Bridge was originally an arched bridge made of reinforced concrete. The original bridge was destroyed by Typhoon Amber in 1997 and its replacement by Typhoon Bilis in 2000. Today's Jinxing Bridge was opened in November 2003. Typhoons and earthquakes are natural phenomena that Taroko cannot avoid.

The tremendous power of typhoons and earthquakes mean that Tarok's natural and cultural scenery is always changing.
